History of Little Switzerland
Little Switzerland is located in the mountains of Western North Carolina on the Blue Ridge Parkway,
midway between Asheville & Blowing Rock.
Little Switzerland was named because of its sweeping panoramas of deep valleys and distant ranges resemble those of the foothills of the Swiss Alps.
In June, 1909 three men hiked carefully over the rough terrain of Grassy Mountain.
After reaching the open meadows of the top, they sat gazing in disbelief. From all sides, as far as the eye could see, they were surrounded
by an incredible view of misty blue mountains and lush green valleys. To the west, Mount Mitchell, the
Black Brothers, and Celo; to the south, Linville Mountain, Turkey Cove, the valley of North Fork of
the Catawba River, and, in the distance, the South Mountains; to the east and the northeast, Table
Rock, Hawksbill and Grandfather; and to the north, almost obscured by the brow of the mountain they
were on and by the tops of chestnut trees, Roan.
Little Switzerland is centrally located to many of the areas biggest attractions including: The Blue Ridge Parkway, Mineral Museum and Visitor’s Center, Emerald Village, Gem Mountain, Rio Dolce Mining, Spruce Pine Gems, Anita’s Gems, The Gem Shop, Mt Mitchell State Park, Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, Roan Mountain, The Appalachian Trail, the Mountains to Sea Trail, Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, the major North Carolina ski resorts and much more.
Little Switzerland is midway between Boone and Asheville making this an ideal spot to visit and roam the mountains.

Little Switzerland Book Exchange
Located in the resort village of Little Switzerland, NC, 9432 NC Hwy 226A our seasonal bookstore offers the visitor to the Blue Ridge Parkway a singular, literary break from the larger world. The village, founded in 1909 as a "Bavarian-like" summer retreat from the heat of the Piedmont plains, has a remained a summer colony with 50 mile -long views and high altitude breezes that make summer an old fashion pleasure.
Our store, founded in 1987, now encompasses 4000 square feet of reading rooms, porches and open verandas for relaxing with coffee, lunch and or wine through a summer or fall day. With over 100,000 titles and multiple reading rooms, the bookstore is a must for the book lover and a welcomed retreat for all when a break is desired from the great outdoors or when an all-day shelter is welcomed due to weather.
Situated at 3500 feet in elevation, we claim to be the "highest bookstore" in the United States, east of the Denver, CO. This, of course, has not been verified by a committee of geography experts, but it is what we claim and we are sticking to it. Although this factoid can not be taken as a statement of quality about our books, it does ensure you that our temperatures are refreshingly cool even on the most pernicious days of heat experienced elsewhere.
Our retail philosophy is a bit different: we do not sell our books on the internet...we keep them here for your perusal and purchase. Little Switzerland is a distant destination for most travelers, yet one that will be rewarded with a deep, rich inventory of books for those who are seeking a day or two in the natural paradise of our village
